This vibrant impressionist scene by the well listed artist Alfred Smith (1854-1936) captures a solitary woodsman gathering firewood in an autumn forest. Bent double, he lays cut branches on the leaf-strewn ground. The scene radiates a quiet dignity, offering an intimate glimpse into the rhythms of rural labour. Signed and dated. The letters preceding his signature, found on many of his paintings, are likely “Bx de TC,”. This stands for “Bordeaux, de tout cœur”, an idiosyncratic signature the artist used meaning “From Bordeaux, whole-heartedly.” Well presented in an ornate gilt frame with an acanthus running pattern. Artist Biography

Alfred Smith (1854-1936) was a French painter born in Bordeaux to a father of Welsh origin and a mother from Bordeaux. He joined a circle of local landscape artists influenced by Courbet and Corot, studying with Hippolyte Pradelles, Léonce Chabry, and Amédée Baudit. Smith exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1880, earning an honourable mention, and in 1883 his painting Le Quai de Bacalan, le Soir was shown there. By the 1880s, he had become the leading figure of the Bordeaux School. He received a third-class medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1888, a bronze medal in 1889, and was named a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1894. In 1900, he won a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. Smith was distinguished for his atmospheric depictions of woods, gardens, and cityscapes, characterised by a subtle and nuanced palette. He painted scenes from Bordeaux, Paris, and Venice before discovering the Creuse Valley, where his style evolved toward a brighter palette. He is considered part of the Crozant School, a group of artists inspired by the landscapes around the village of Crozant. He exhibited regularly at French salons into the 1920s, and many of his works are now held in museums in France and Italy. Smith died in Paris in 1936, leaving a legacy celebrated for its sensitive handling of light and landscape.
