A beautiful example of American folk portraiture from the 1830s. In this large-scale portrait, the female sitter gazes directly at the viewer, her hair centre-parted and smoothed flat against her temples before being gathered into a bun with small loops over the ears. She wears a silvery blue dress with leg-of-mutton sleeves that taper at the wrists, complemented by a wide fichu collar of sheer fabric covering her shoulders. A small red Bible rests in her hand, a common attribute in American portraits of this period. The portrait possesses considerable presence and is beautifully presented in an elaborate gilt frame with foliate running patterns and shell and acanthus corner ornamentation. Unsigned. On canvas.
Condition
The artwork exhibits signs of wear consistent with age. Fine craquelure is observed throughout the paint surface. Minor surface marks/abrasions are present. Inspection under UV light reveals some previous restoration. The canvas has been previously relined. Light stretcher marks are visible on the surface of the painting. The frame has minor surface wear. Overall, the artwork presents in very good condition for its age.
