19th Century Oil - The Knife Grinder
Description
A lively nineteenth-century genre scene depicting a knife grinder working at his whetstone, whilst a gentleman, a lady, and a young girl with a hoop and stick stand nearby. The scene is set beneath the ornate columns of a grand building, with an idyllic landscape beyond. Fowl graze beside the group whilst a dog confronts a cat. Well presented in a black frame with a gilt inner edge. Unsigned. On panel.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure. There is a horizontal split to the panel visible in the lower half of the painting with a small area of paint loss, which has been repaired. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Light wear to the frame. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
