After William Hogarth (1697-1764) - Engraving Mr Garrick as Richard the Third
Description
A fine 19th Century engraving from the original by William Hogarth and Charles Grignion. Hogarth depicts his close friend, the actor David Garrick, as Richard III waking from a vision of the ghosts of those he murdered to attain the throne. Based on a 1745 painting that currently hangs at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
This wonderful print displays Garrick's dynamic ability to bring Shakespeare to life for his contemporaries. Garrick was a major Shakespearean during the eighteenth century and the organiser of the first Shakespeare jubilee festival in 1769. Inscribed with the date of publication 'according to Act of Parliament June 20th 1746'.
