Adriaen van der Werff (1659–1722) was a Dutch painter renowned for his refined and elegant style during the late Baroque period. Born in Kralingen (now part of Rotterdam), he trained under Eglon van der Neer and developed a meticulous technique that blended classical idealism with the smooth, polished surfaces characteristic of the fijnschilder tradition. Van der Werff became known for his mythological and biblical scenes, as well as his portraits and allegories, often rendered with theatrical poses. His mastery of light and composition earned him widespread acclaim across Europe. By the early 18th century, Van der Werff was one of the most celebrated painters in Europe. His works were admired for their technical precision and emotional restraint. Despite changing tastes, his influence remained significant, and he left behind a legacy of works that reflect the transition from Dutch Golden Age realism to the more decorative aesthetics of the Rococo. He died in Rotterdam in 1722, leaving a substantial oeuvre that continues to be studied for its artistry and its place in the evolution of European painting.
