A truly exquisite copy of the original painting by Edward Landseer, showing a dairy maid milking a cow in a crowded barn full of goats, with a man watching from the door. The maid's focus has been caught by a naughty magpie pecking at the handle of a silver spoon in a discarded shoe to the left. The colours of the painting are remarkably vivid given its age and the artist has done the original painting real justice in this accomplished copy.
The painting has been presented in an equally impressive Aesthetic Movement ebonized frame with the traditional low relief, foliate molding and gilt Greek keys at the inner window. The frame is finished with a fine internal gilt slip and the original Crown glass.
On wood panel.The painting is in remarkable condition for its age with virtually no discolouration. There is a line of abrasion to the paint along very outer left and upper edge of the panel, likely where the painting has slipped in the frame. The frame has very small losses at the upper left and lower right corners and slight tarnishing to the internal gilt slip. There is a chip to the gilt slip at the lower edge. The frame is in overall remarkable condition.
