Description

A family celebrates the Christian holiday of Epiphany in this charming genre scene after a 1774 work by Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805). In the composition, the father holds slices of King's Cake in a cloth, whilst his youngest son distributes them to the family. King's Cake is traditionally associated with the holiday. The original work, titled 'Le Gâteau des Rois', is held in the collection of the Musée Fabre in Montpellier, France. Well presented in a gilt frame. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure. Areas of overpainting. Faint abrasions to the lower right. Light wear to the frame.
