Description

A fine copy of Gustave Courbet 1849 oil, The Stonebreakers by A.P. Izquierdo. The scene depicts two pitiable characters breaking stones on the side of the road for work. This particular composition is considered by many as the founding work of realism. The artist has signed the scene to the lower left and the oil has been presented in a heavy gilt frame, with foliate cove and laurel branch running pattern. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

A patch repair has been made to the reverse of the canvas, concealed by a small area of overpainting to the front. The canvas is also starting to wear thin along the top half of the scene with areas of craquelure forming near centre. Some minor wear and chips to the gilt frame, particularly to the lower member.
