Illuminated by light from a cellar door, a woman holds a mousetrap and gazes directly at the viewer. Mousetraps were a popular motif in Dutch genre painting. At first glance, the subject appears to be a portrayal of everyday life, but the mousetrap could also convey an amorous message. The inviting light from the doorway, together with the woman's direct gaze, perhaps suggests that the mousetrap alludes to the entrapment of love or seduction. Well presented in an ornate gilt frame. Condition
The condition is very good. Discolouration and craquelure, as is typical for a picture of this age. Areas of overpainting. Light wear to the frame.
