This expansive watercolour view depicts Znaim, now Znojmo in the Czech Republic. The work is a copy of a watercolour by Giuseppe-Pietro Bagetti (1764-1831), commissioned by King Louis-Philippe. Another copy by Felice Maria Ferdinando Storelli (1778-1854) is in the collection of the Louvre.
The scene depicts the battle of Znaim, the final battle between Austria and France in the War of the Fifth Coalition. Following their defeat at the Battle of Wagram, Archduke Charles of Austria retreated north into Bohemia, with the French army in pursuit, determined to defeat the Austrians decisively. The French forces caught up with the Austrians at Znaim on 10 July 1809. Recognising they were in no position to give battle, the Austrians proposed a ceasefire while Archduke Charles began peace negotiations.
However, the ceasefire was broken. After two days of futile fighting that resulted in similar casualties for both sides with neither gaining advantage, Napoleon finally arrived bearing news of an armistice. Well presented in a black and gilt-effect frame. Unsigned. On paper.
