A remarkably fine late 19th Century copy after the painting 'The Blind Fiddler' by Sir David Wilkie RA. The original is currently held at the Tate Britain, London. The artist has faithfully and meticulously rendered the original composition, in a manner which retains the visual intrigue and characterful figures. A blind man playing the fiddle is received by a large country family, and some of their expressions are captured in the moment. The original was exhibited at the Royal Academy, to generally positive reception.
While the artist here has not included every tiny detail from Wilkie, the attempt to recreate the atmosphere and mood of the original work is both clear and successful.
Well-presented in a fine gilt wooden frame with beaded detail, plain cove and lamb's tongue running pattern.
Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some craquelure. There are several areas of previous restoration, with an indentation in the canvas to the lower right corner, and some minor paint loss to the left edge. The canvas has been relined. The frame has some small scuffs, mainly to the corners, but is in good condition. The overall appearance of the work is good.
