A delightful mid-19th century genre scene depicting an elderly gentleman seated at a table with an open book, reading aloud to his granddaughter, who sits beside him in a vibrant turquoise dress and red bonnet, captivated by his tale. The painting is presented in an ornate gilt frame with slip, complete with palmette decorations to the cove and delicate running patterns to the profile. Signed lower left 'W. S. P. Henderson' and dated 1865. On canvas.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. The canvas has been relined. Inspection under UV light reveals minor areas of overpainting. There is a crack in the paint layer to the upper right hand quadrant. Signs of light wear and small moulding losses to the gilt effect frame. The overall condition of the artwork is good.
