This mid-19th century portrait (circa. 1850) depicts a respectable middle-class woman from Northern Europe, possibly of Dutch or Flemish origin. She wears a dark wool dress with a white muslin fichu secured by a brooch, and a white lace mob cap tied with a pale blue ribbon, a style typical of regional dress in the Netherlands and surrounding areas during this period. Her jewellery - including a cross pendant, drop earrings, and several rings - suggests social status and religious devotion. The sitter rests her hand on a leather-bound Bible, a common motif in bourgeois portraiture used to emphasise piety, literacy, and moral respectability. Unsigned. Well presented in an ornate gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Abrasions and craquelure throughout. Notable scratches to the upper-left and centre-right. Notable craquelure to the figure's dress. Slight slackening to the canvas. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of overpainting to the dress. The overall condition of the artwork is good, however some areas could benefit from restoration. Wear to the frame, including scuffs, chips and indentations. Historic woodworm damage to the reverse; however, this has been treated and the wood is pest free. Overall the frame is in good condition for its age.
