Artist born at Whitehaven, Cumberland, James Clarke Waite (1832-1920) was the son of a schoolteacher. He studied at the Government School of Design in Newcastle upon Tyne, then at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh. He then attended the Royal Academy School in London, followed by further study in Paris. On his return, he took a post teaching at his alma mater in Newcastle and also began exhibiting. He exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Royal Academy, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and at the Royal Society of British Artists, amongst others. He was elected as a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1873. Waite emigrated to Australia in 1886 where he established himself as a portrait and animal painter. Examples of his work are in the Museum of Freemasonry, New Art Gallery Walsall and Kirklees Museums and Galleries. He is also represented in major galleries in Australia including the National Gallery of Victoria, Bendigo Art Gallery, and Manly Art Gallery, New South Wales.
