A 20th century copy of Claude Lorrain's 'View of a Port with the Capitol' c.1639. The French artist best known for, and one of the greatest masters of, ideal landscape painting, an art form that seeks to present a view of nature more beautiful and harmonious than nature itself.
This copy is a decent attempt at capturing the illuminating nature of the old masters. The artist has used touches of gouache to highlight areas of interest and give depth to the composition. Painted on wove laid to board.
Unsigned.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration.
