Description

A charming portrait of the infant James II, after Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641). Rendered in a typical 19th century style, the child is depicted with wide expressive eyes, rosy cheeks and a slight smile. The artist has completed the piece with confident brushstrokes and stunning attention to detail in this accomplished study. Unsigned. Well presented in a gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a painting of this age, including fine craquelure, abrasions and areas of discolouration throughout. Some undulation to the canvas. Inspection under UV light reveals some restoration. The canvas has been relined. Wear to the frame, including cracks, chips, scuffs and indentations throughout. The frame has been touched in with gold paint.
