A Fine watercolour depicting a woman reading in the dwindling light of the evening.

Cold, dark blues are complemented by golden yellow beams of sunlight and topped off with white gouache highlights.

The painting is signed in the bottom left-hand corner.

The painting is well presented in a gilded wooden frame with a washline mount board. Affixed to the rear of the frame is a 'Barton & Long' framers label.

Signed. On watercolour paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is light foxing. There is some dirt under the glazing. The frame is in good condition, with some marks and scrapes.

Artist Biography

A little-known self-taught painter of marine pictures and illustrator who was born the son of a musician in Stapleton, in the Bristol area and in 1904 became a founder member of the Bristol Savages and an exhibitor at the Ipswich Art Club 1902-05. In 1908 he spent some time in Italy, touring, painting and studying the old masters. He exhibited at the RA and is represented in the collection of Bristol Art Gallery.
