A very fine watercolour Jacobean interior scene showing an altar at which a crowd of people are partaking in a Eucharist. A priest blesses the wine and hands it to an elderly man who kneels before him. A young couple also kneel at the altar whilst a crowd of people wait in line. The artist was a clear follower of the historical painter Charles Cattermole (1832-1900). The composition and chaotic placement of bodies echoes Cattermole as does the interior lit by many windows.
The painting is dated "(18)83" in the lower left corner beneath the frame, two decades after Cattermole's death. The painting is presented in a fine late 19th Century gilt effect frame with swept corners and floral ornamentation.
On wove.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and fading. There are small repaired tears in the lower corners and a larger repaired tear in the upper right. These are not noticeable. The frame has some losses at the corners and to the ornamentation and a small loss to the inner window. There is some splitting to the corners.

Charles Cattermole (1832-1900), nephew of George Cattermole. He painted historical subjects in a style similar to his uncle and exhibited mainly at the New Watercolour Society and the Royal Society of British Artists. Also exhibited at the Royal Academy and British Institution. Elected Associate of the Royal Institute in 1864 and a member in 1870.
