DescriptionA lovely watercolour painting with graphite and charcoal by the British artist A. Dorothy Cohen, depicting a portrait of a girl. Signed and dated to the lower right-hand corner. Artist's name and title inscribed on the reverse. On watercolour paper, laid to backing card. Presented in a distressed cream frame, as shown.
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration, small marks and foxing. Small scuffs to the frame.

A. Dorothy Cohen was born in Tottenham, the daughter of the headmaster of Tottenham Grammar School. She attended the Female School of Art, which was later absorbed into the Central School of Arts & Crafts, and finished her studies at the Royal Academy School. Active as a painter from c.1916, between 1917-38 she exhibited at Cooling Gallery, the International Society of Sculptors, Painters & Gravers, Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Society of Women Artists and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Her work includes a mural executed with her artist friend Winifred Hardman at St. Peters Church, Hammersmith, London. After World War II Dorothy Cohen continued to paint having the use of a large studio next to her house in Leigh. She exhibited at the Beecroft Art Gallery and a portrait by her is in the collection of what is now known as Southend Museums Service. Cohen lived in London and died in Leigh-on-sea, Essex.
