A striking nineteenth-century oil depicting the sixth station of the cross. In the scene, Veronica is overcome with sympathy upon seeing Christ carrying the cross, and offers him her veil to wipe the sweat from his brow. When he returns the veil, the image of his face is miraculously captured upon it. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure throughout. Losses to the paint and wear around the edges of the canvas. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
