An amusing nineteenth-century genre scene depicting a young child resting on her mother’s lap while two other children blow homemade trumpets. The lively commotion has startled the dog, which lifts its head from its bowl and barks, while a timid cat peers cautiously from the shadowed doorway. The scene is set within a rustic interior with a glimpse of the landscape beyond. Well presented in an ornate gilt frame. Unsigned. On canvas.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure. The canvas has been relined and inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Scuffs and chips to the frame. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
