Description

A cobbler is depicted in his humble workshop, with his wife nursing their baby in the background. This charming domestic scene captures the intimate character and everyday life favoured by Dutch Golden Age genre painters. The composition is inspired by a seventeenth-century work by Dutch genre painter Egbert van Heemskerck (1610–1680), which was sold at Sotheby's in 2019. An indistinct monogram and date are faintly visible to the lower left, and the work is well presented in an ornate gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and fine craquelure throughout. The canvas has been previously relined, and inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Scuffs, stable cracking, and some losses to the frame. Despite the noted imperfections, the condition is good for a picture of this age, and the piece presents well.
