19th Century Oil - Portrait of the Virgin Mary

Description

A naïve study of the Virgin Mary in prayer, dressed in her traditional blue and red robes with hands clasped together. Though simplistic in execution, the work is full of character and well presented in a contemporary gilt frame. The piece is unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Maintains a desirable character and patina. Signs of wear consistent with age. Fine craquelure observed throughout. Minor surface marks and abrasions. Small, localised losses to the paint layer. The frame has minor surface wear, including small chips, scuffs, indentations and stable cracking. The artwork is in good condition for its age.
