William Webb - Framed Mid 19th Century Oil Brace of Red Grouse

Description

A fine sporting still life by William Webb (1790–1856), depicting a brace of red grouse with plumage rendered in rich earth tones of browns and russets. Webb's masterful treatment of light captures the textural qualities of the feathers and the weight of the birds with ease, demonstrating a traditional approach to game painting. The composition is indistinctly signed 'W. Webb' to the lower left and dated 1830, and is beautifully presented in a heavy gilt frame with ornate shell and acanthus corner mouldings. On canvas.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age. Fine craquelure observed throughout. Minor surface marks and abrasions noted to the perimeter. Small, localised losses and cracks to the paint layer (lower edge). Inspection under UV light reveals areas of previous restoration, most notably to the background. Stretcher marks are visible on the surface of the painting with light undulation to the canvas. The frame has moderate surface wear including small chips and stable cracking. The four corner ornaments show signs of remodelling and repair. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
