Winter initially began work in a Manchester business, studying art in the evenings at Manchester Academy of Fine Arts. When he began painting full-time he visited Holland and Belgium and studied under Verlat at the Antwerp Academy. From 1889 he exhibited at the Royal Academy, also at the Paris Salon, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and the Royal Society of British Artists who elected him a member in 1896. In 1902 Tatton Winter was elected a member of the London Sketch Club and also showed at the Croydon Art Society and in 1924 he was one of the artists chosen to provide a miniature painting for Queen Mary's Dolls' House, now at Windsor Castle. The London Borough of Sutton contains an impressive number of paintings and drawings by William Tatton Winter and an oil painting by him is in the collection of the Mercer Art Gallery.
