Artist Biography
Scottish painter William Stewart MacGeorge (1861-1931) was born at Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire. He studied at the Royal Society of Arts School in Edinburgh, before going to Antwerp to study under Verlat. On his return to Scotland, he painted subjects depicting children at play, executed in low-toned colours. However, he soon came under the influence of E.A. Hornel and the Kirkcudbright School of Painters who persuaded him to use brighter colours and greater impasto. He showed at the Royal Society of Arts, Royal Academy, Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts, and Walker Art Gallery. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Arts in 1894 and a full member in 1910 and he was also a member of the Society of Scottish Artists. His work can be seen in Aberdeen Art Gallery, City of Edinburgh Art Collection, and Dundee Art Gallery.
