Painter and tapestry weaver the son of a carpenter in Belgrave, Leicestershire. In the early 1870’s he moved with his family to London. In 1874, at the age of 7, he was apprenticed as a tapestry weaver with Morris & Co, at their Merton Abbey Tapestry Workshops in Surrey where he was trained by weaver and stained glass artist John Henry Dearle. He subsequently remained at Merton Abbey for 18 years, returning after that on a number of occasions to carry out special commissions. Early in his career, he lost the sight of his left eye after having been hit by a cricket ball. This injury didn't prevent him from becoming a master weaver with the firm, responsible for some of its most important tapestries and the census of 1911 records him as an ‘Artist Craftsman’. Sleath's weavings were exhibited in the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society shows in London 1889, 1890, 1896, 1906, 1910 and 1912.
In addition to his work as a weaver, Sleath was also a painter, mainly of landscapes. These were exhibited between 1895 and 1907 at the Royal Academy, New Gallery, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, and Royal Institute of Oil Painters in London; the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and at Manchester City Art Gallery.
