Description

William Rainey (1852-1936) - Inscribed Original Late 19th Century Watercolour. An illustration for the publication 'A Hero of the Mutiny' by Escott Lynn, published by W. & R. Chambers Ltd (1913). Inscribed in pencil under the image, beneath the mount, reading 'A Hero of the Mutiny - Standing in the stirrups he made a mighty cut at the man's head, p. 119' and numbered no. 4. Laid to a piece of backing card measuring 39 x 31 cm, presented in a cream card hinged mount measuring 45 x 35 cm. Inscribed. On wove. Condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration but generally the appearance is excellent. A few minor undulations to the top sheet edge where fixed to the backing card, but this does not affect the image. There is a very minor area of light surface abrasion to the upper centre in the area of smoke, but this does not greatly affect the appearance of the image. The backing card has some foxing, but this is not affecting the watercolour.
