There is a small loss to the panel's lower left corner. The frame has minor surface wear consistent with age, including scuffs and stable cracks. Various losses to the bead and reel running pattern. Overall, the artwork presents in very good condition.

William Mainwaring Palin (1862-1947) Painter and decorative artist, born in Hanley, Staffordshire, the son of William Palin, an engraver. Following a five-year apprenticeship at the Potteries firm of Josiah Wedgwood and Sons in Etruria, Palin was awarded a scholarship to the Royal College of Art, subsequently pursuing further study in Rome and Paris. He joined the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) in 1905, serving as honorary secretary from 1911 to 1913 and rising to vice-president in 1914. He exhibited extensively at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, as well as at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, and elsewhere. During the 1930s he was a frequent visitor to Walberswick, Suffolk, where much of his painting was done.
