Description

An exquisite study of a young woman praying in a quiet corner of a church. The artist has beautifully captured the dappled evening light from the church windows, which illuminates the Bible held in the woman's hands. Presented in a distressed gilt-effect wooden frame with twisted acanthus leaf detailing to the inner edge. Though unsigned, the painting is typical of the artist. His name is inscribed on the verso and on the remnants of a label. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some mild discolouration and very slight foxing. There are some minor scuffs to the frame. Overall in very good condition.

Artist Biography

William Lee (1810-1865) was a painter, watercolourist, and draughtsman. He primarily painted genre scenes. He exhibited occasionally at the Royal Academy, at Suffolk Street, and the New Watercolour Society, of which he became an associate in 1845 and a member in 1848. He belonged to the Langham School for several years. He mainly painted English and French subjects. A painting by Lee is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
