William Johnston RWS (1893-1974) - Original Early 20th Century Watercolour. Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours exhibition label verso. William Johnston was a painter of animals and birds, decorating ceramics with his designs, as well as landscapes in watercolour and pastel. He also worked on the heraldic emblems in the Scottish National War Memorial at Edinburgh Castle. Born at Edinburgh, he attended Edinburgh College of Art, where he studied under William Walls, and married fellow student Dorothy Nesbitt. Already regular visitors to Kirkcudbright, and friends of Ernest and Jessie Taylor (Jessie M. King), the Johnstons moved there permanently in 1940. Ronald Searle was posted to Kirkcudbright the following year and made sketches of their daughters which he later used for his St Trinian’s series. The couple ran a crafts shop in Kirkcudbright, selling their own work, and supported the preservation of the town’s architectural heritage. It is for his animal painting that William Johnston is remembered chiefly. In recognition of his art, The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland awarded Johnston a life fellowship. On board.
