Description

A 19th century engraving, depicting the interior of a gambling house in Covent Garden (after the painting at the Sir John Soane's Museum). The sixth plate which is part of a series of engravings entitled 'A Rake's Progress', documenting the highs and lows of ‘the rake', a long established symbol of masculine waywardness and depravity. Inscribed in plate 'Invented, painted and engraved by W. Hogarth and published June 25th 1735 according to Act of Parliament. Sold at Golden Head in Leicester Fields, London'. Signed in plate. On wove.

Condition

There are numerous tears to the paper, including a two long 14cm tears to the lower and upper areas of the paper where the plate line lies. Discolouration and foxing to the paper with minor watermarks. Creasing to the corners of the paper.
