William H Toms after Robert West - 18th Century Engraving Allhallows

Description

A remarkably well kept engraving showing the South East prospect of the Church of Allhallows in London. The original drawing was by Robert West (1710-1770) and engraved by William Henry Toms (1700-1765). The print has been subtly hand coloured and the hues remain true. The plate has an inscription at the bottom giving the history of the church, a dedication and the printer's, artist's and engraver's names. There is a date in the top right corner. The print is presented in a smart cartridge card mount with a thin gilt effect frame. Signed in plate. On wove.

Condition

The condition is remarkable for a picture of this age with only a small amount of discolouration. The frame has some scuffs to the gilt.

Artist Biography

William Henry Toms (c. 1700–1765) was an English engraver. He worked on portraits, book-plates, landscapes and prints of buildings. Among his works were the plates for Robert West's "Perspective Views of All the Ancient Churches in London" (1736–1739).[1] In 1741, he worked with Thomas Badeslade on "Chorographia Britanniae or a New Set of Maps of all the Counties in England and Wales". The maps were republished on 29 September 1742, with additional place names.
