In this charming oil painting, Garland depicts a milkmaid and her son walking cattle across a country bridge and into earthy woodlands on a crisp spring day. From the maid's bonnet to the distant church spire, Garland has spared no attention to detail, the resulting artwork verging on the sublime in a modest, humble manner.
The artwork acts whimsically, creating an idyllic impression of a simpler time.
The painting is neatly signed and dated in the bottom left-hand corner. Well presented in a gilded Louis XV wood frame with composite moulding, including floral elements, as well as pronounced corner ornamentation.
On canvas on stretchers.The painting has been relined and has faint marks from previous stretcher bars. There is some craquelure to the surface, and some minor discolouration. Inspection under UV light shoes some small areas of restoration to the paint surface.

Active in Winchester, Garland was renowned for painting figures, landscapes, and animals. He exhibited throughout London between 1857 and 1874, most notably with the Royal Academy and the Suffolk Street Gallery. He died in 1882.
