A fine and evocative watercolour by the Scottish painter William Fleming Vallance RSA (1827-1904), entitled 'In Connemara, Ireland'. Known to have painted in the area, his brushwork and en plein air technique is evident through the immediacy of this bucolic highland setting. A figure is depicting, crouched beside a stone built cottage, surrounded by a wild and untamed landscape.
Well-presented in a washline mount and gilt wooden frame, as shown.
Signed and dated and inscribed. On wove.In very good condition for a picture of this age. There is some light surface discolouration, and some trapped debris behind the glazing. The frame has only very minor scuffing.

William Fleming Vallance (1827-1904) was a Scottish marine and landscape painter. Vallance commenced to exhibit at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1849, but it was not until 1857 that he took up art as a profession. His earlier work had been chiefly portraiture and genre. After 1870, he painted principally in Wicklow, Connemara, and Galway, a series of pictures of Irish life and character, humorous in figure and incident, and fresh in landscape setting. His feeling for nature found its most vital expression in watercolour, which he usually painted en plein air. Vallance was elected associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1875, and became an academician in 1881.
