Description

This is a fine example of a Victorian era high society portrait, dating to the mid 19th century. Painted by the highly successful and sought after draughtsman, watercolourist and lithographer William Drummond, who was most active during the years 1800-1850. The sitter has been positioned leaning against a stone ledge, beyond which the artist has painted a rural landscape. This choice of composition may indicate that the sitter is a member of the landed gentry and likely holds ownership and titles over the land we can see behind him. We can see the artist's fine, experienced pencil lines in some areas of the portrait.

The present portrait has been painted using a similar composition and setting to Drummond's 1850 Portrait of William Makepeace Thackeray, held at the Morgan Library & Museum, New York. As in the present portrait, Thackeray is posed wearing a dress coat, leaning against a stone ledge with a townscape in the distance. We have included an image of this portrait above for reference.

The painting is excellently presented in an attractive maplewood frame with gilt slip.

On wove.

Condition
