William Collins - Late 19th Century Oil Rustic Civility
Description
A fine copy after Collins's well-known composition, in which a group of country children open a gate for a passing traveller. The rider himself is never shown - his presence indicated only by the shadow falling across the ground, a device that lifts the picture well above the ordinary. Titled on the stretcher and inscribed "copy". Well presented in a gilt-effect frame. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Fine craquelure observed throughout. Minor surface marks and abrasions. A light, even patina of age is present across the surface of the artwork. The frame has minor surface wear and scuffs. Some losses to the frame moulding/running pattern, most noticeably at the lower right corner; this has been partially repaired. The artwork is in very good condition for its age.
