This fine landscape depicts a tranquil Highland river scene with distant mountains. Completed in a muted colour palette, emphasizing the misty morning and atmospheric scenery. A flock of sheep graze close to the river's edge, adding detail and interest into the wild landscape.
Although this fine landscape is not a typical scene by Knell, the main focus of this piece is clearly the iridescent water that flows from the mountains. Knell is known for his ability to capture movement and depth within his seascapes and this fine landscape has all the hallmarks of Knell's finest nautical subject matter.
Well presented in a gilt frame and gilt slip.
Signed. On board.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and surface dirt. There are very minor flecks of paint loss to the outer edges of the board. Possibly caused by a previous frame. Minor marks and losses to the frame, some of which have been restored.

William Adolphus Knell (1801-1875) was a successful British maritime painter of the 19th century. Knell was born in 1801 at Carisbrooke on the Isle of Wight. By 1825 had already exhibited his works at the Royal Academy. He soon built up a successful practice as a painter of maritime and particularly naval subjects, exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy, British Institution and the Society of British Artists. Knell was twice commissioned by Queen Victoria for paintings. His picture 'The Arrival of Prince Albert', was bought by the prince himself and remains in the Royal Collection. Knell died on 9 July 1875 at his home in Kentish Town and was buried at Abney Park Cemetery.
