A patchwork of brown, terracotta, and pale blue roofs lines a serene harbour in this impressionistic scene by Dutch artist Willem Horselenberg (1881-1961). Several small boats are moored along the banks, whilst an overcast sky swirls overhead. Signed to the lower left. Well presented in a vintage gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age including discolouration and craquelure. The artwork has undergone restorative work, including a canvas tear repair and areas of overpainting. Light wear to the frame.

Artist Biography

Wouterus Lourens Horselenberg (1881-1961), known as Willem Horselenberg, was a Dutch painter primarily of landscapes, cityscapes, serene river views, and harbour scenes in a late-Impressionist style. Although he did not receive any formal artistic training, Horselenberg worked at a stage decoration studio in Rotterdam and then as a housepainter whilst practising painting as an amateur in his spare time. He was a member of the Painters' Union, and also exhibited at an exhibition in The Hague with this union.
