Description

A very fine and delicate watercolour, depicting the town of Edam in the province of North Holland, Netherlands, by the well-listed artist Wilfrid Williams Ball RE ROI (1853-1917). This river scene depicts boats and the vernacular architecture of the town, including a large construction crane. The artist is proficient in the medium, and this is most evident in the reflections of the river. Well-presented in the original untouched gilt wooden frame, and a wide card mount, as shown. Label to the reverse from Robert Dunthorne reads 'Rembrandt Land Exhibition (32) 1889'. Signed and incsribed on the reverse. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some discolouration. There is also a closed tear to the lower left near the artist's signature. There are some marks and debris to the mount and small losses and scuffing to the frame, as shown.

Artist Biography

Wilfrid Williams Ball (1853-1917) was a painter and etcher, born in London and educated at Hackney Grammar School. While training to become an accountant, he devoted much spare time to artistic interests, taking courses at Heatherley's and after exhibiting at the RA he gave up his accountancy studies, devoting himself full-time to his painting in 1877. He travelled extensively in Europe and the Middle East.

He exhibited at RA, RBA, RE, RI and held several solo exhibitions at the FAS. Elected to the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, 1882 and the ROI, 1889, Ball also designed Christmas cards and postcards. In 1916, he returned to accountancy, and was sent to North Africa on behalf of the army. He worked in Cairo and then in Khartoum, where he died on 14 February 1917 as a result of severe heat stroke.
