Artist Biography
Wilfred Fairclough was born in Blackburn. He studied at Blackburn School of Art prior to gaining a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in 1931 where he studied under Malcolm Osborne in the engraving school. In 1934 he won the much-coveted Rome Scholarship in Engraving. Following his return to England in 1937 Fairclough worked as a painter and engraver. He exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, and Redfern Gallery. Fairclough began teaching at Kingston upon Thames College of Art in 1938 and after serving in the Royal Air Force during World War II, returned to the College. From 1962 to 1970 he was Principal of the College and subsequently Assistant Director of the newly created Kingston Polytechnic until his retirement in 1972. He is represented in a large number of public and private galleries, notably the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Contemporary Art Society, Ashmolean, and Graves Art Gallery.
