Artist Biography
Wilfred Fairclough was a painter, born in Blackburn he studied at Blackburn School of Art prior to gaining a scholarship to the RCA in 1931 where studied under Malcolm Osborne in the engraving school. In 1934 he won the much-coveted Rome Scholarship in Engraving. Following his return to England in 1937 Fairclough worked as a painter and engraver. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, and Redfern Gallery; Royal Birmingham Society of Artists; Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, the Royal Scottish Academy, and in Sweden, Poland, Finland, Australia and New Zealand. During the early 1940's Fairclough was one of the 97 artists who were recruited by the Pilgrim's Trust for the Recording England project.
Fairclough began teaching at Kingston upon Thames College of Art in 1938 and after serving in the Royal Air Force during World War II, returned to the College. From 1962 to 1970 he was Principal of the College and subsequently Assistant Director of the newly created Kingston Polytechnic until his retirement in 1972. He is represented in a large number of public and private galleries, notably the BM the V&A, CAS, ACGB, Ashmolean and Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield. He was married to the artist Joan Vernon Cryer and was the father of artist Michael Fairclough. He died in Kingston upon Thames on 8 January 1996.
