A finely executed watercolour painting of an archway surrounded in delicate flowers and foliage by the listed artist Walter Spencer Stanhope Tyrwhitt. The artist has used the characteristics of the watercolour medium to give the painting a sense of depth and texture. Well presented in a washline mount and a gilt effect frame, as shown. Unsigned. On watercolour paper.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and minor foxing. The frame contains some minor scuffed edges resulting in some losses, particularly in the top right and left hand corners. Generally in fine condition.

Artist Biography
Painter and architect who was born in Oxford and remained there most of his life studying at the University where he read history. The husband of his 2nd cousin artist Ursula Tyrwhitt. Nothing is known of his art or architectural education and it is doubtful that he worked either to earn a living especially as he had independent means. What is known is that his father The Reverend Richard St. John Tyrwhitt, (1827-1895) a minister of religion based at Oxford University was also an artist. Walter was one of the founder members of the Oxford Art Society and exhibited at the Alpine Gallery, Baillie Gallery, Doré Gallery, Grosvenor Gallery, ISSPG and at the NEAC. At his death he left his wife in excess of one million pounds on 2014 valuations.
