The painting has undergone restoration work, including canvas repairs – some of which are visible from the front. There is some scuffing to the surface of the painting and a small stain to the upper-left corner. There is some craquelure to the surface. The frame shows signs of wear consistent with age, including light scuffing, small losses to the upper-right edge and slight separation to the mitre joints.

Walter Savage Cooper (1861-1943) was born at Castle Road, St Pancras, London on 18 November 1861. In his lifetime he exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists and the New Water Colour Society. In 1905 he was commissioned by Hampstead General Hospital to paint a portrait of their founder Dr W. Heath Strange. He died in 1943 in Chelmsford, Essex.
