Versatile paint and gallery owner, originally from Swindon, Wiltshire, where his father worked for the Great Western Railway and was a talented amateur artist. Poole briefly studied lithography at Swindon School of Art; at the outbreak of World War II enlisted in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve and was posted to Northumberland, where he gained special leave to attend Newcastle School of Art under Robert Lyon; was discharged on medical grounds in 1943; then worked as a machine shop inspector for Short Brothers and Vickers Armstrong, painting when he could. Poole had shows at Leger and Burlington Galleries, to which he added a controversial Expressionist picture at Swindon Art Gallery in 1943, Redfern Gallery and RA and a solo exhibition at Peter Jones Gallery, 1944.
