A lithograph with hand colouring of Centrophanes Lapponica, commonly known as the Lapland Bunting or Lapland Longspur, by the printer Walter after a drawing by Henry Constantine Richter (1821-1902). First published as Plate 30 in the renowned ornithologist John Gould's (1804-1881) 'The Birds of Great Britain', published in twenty-five parts from 1862-73. Gould would rapidly produce rough sketches from nature to capture the distinctiveness of each species. He then oversaw the process whereby his artists worked his sketches up into the finished drawings. Presented in a wash line mount and a veneer wood frame. Inscribed in plate with the names of the artists and species of bird. The common name of the birds has been inscribed in graphite below the latin name. On wove.
Condition
There is a streak of discolouration to the right side, some very slight foxing, and small marks to the frame. Overall in very good condition.
