W.M. - Original 17th Century Engraving. A portrait of English poet John Milton (1608 - 1674), from the frontispiece for the 1645 edition of his 'Poems'. The ancient Greek inscription beneath is a mocking slight on the ineptitude of the portrait's artist, William Marshall. Surrounding Milton are the Muses of Tragedy (Melpomene), Love Poetry (Erato), Astronomy (Urania) and History (Clio). Signed in plate. On laid. Condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration.
