W.J. Lock - Framed 1885 Dutch School Oil The Returning Soldier
Description
An interesting late 19th century study by the artist W.J. Lock. In this dramatic composition a returning soldier appears to bring bad news to a friend's wife. He holds a walking stick, indicating he has been injured in a recent conflict. The young woman weeps into her hands while a pocket watch and notebook rest on the table, most likely her deceased husband's possessions. The composition has a distinct Dutch feel, from the furniture to the arrangement of the figures.
This fine study has been very well presented in a modern gilt frame.
