W.J. Hardy - 1845 Watercolour Canal Scene
Description
A fine continental canal scene in watercolour, body colour, and gum arabic, possibly depicting Strasbourg in northeastern France. There is exceptional depth to the painting and a wonderful sense of warm sunlight, particularly evident on the buildings in the distance. Presented glazed in a wash line mount and a distressed gilt-effect wooden frame. Signed and dated to the lower-left edge. There is a label on the verso which includes biographical information about the artist. On wove.Condition
There is some mild discolouration and light foxing. There is a closed tear measuring 2.2cm to the upper-left edge. There is some craquelure and some small losses to the paint layer in the lower third. Overall immaculately presented and in good condition for its age.

Artist Biography
W.J. Hardy was a painter and watercolourist, primarily of landscapes. He exhibited two landscapes at the Society of British Artists from 1854 to 1856. A painting by Hardy is in the collection of the British Museum.
