A very fine late 19th century oil depicting Napoleon on board H.M.S. Northumberland. The Northumberland was the boat that transported Napoleon to his exile on St. Helena in 1815. This finely painted full length portrait has wonderfully captured the personality of this instantly recognisable figure in European history. With delicate brushstrokes and attention to detail. Reminiscent of the work by Sir William Quiller Orchardson, 'Napoleon on Board the Bellerophon' which was exhibited in 1880.
Well presented in a fine gilt frame with beading detail and gilt slip.
Signed and dated. On panel.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and craqueleure. With very minor surface abrasions. Small mark to the upper left of the frame. Other minor marks and losses to the edges and corners of the frame. Inspection under UV light reveals no sign of restoration.
